Chicago-Style Bakery Apple Slices


 


This classic Chicago-style dessert features a flaky crust filled with sweet and tangy apples.


Ingredients:

For the Dough:


Ingredient Quantity

All-Purpose Flour 4 cups

Salt 1 teaspoon

Unsalted Butter 1 cup, chilled and cut into small pieces

Cold Water 1/2 cup

Beaten Egg 1 large

For the Filling:


Ingredient Quantity

Peeled, Cored, and Thinly Sliced Apples 10 cups

Granulated Sugar 1 1/2 cups

Packed Light Brown Sugar 1/2 cup

Ground Cinnamon 2 teaspoons

Ground Nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon

All-Purpose Flour 3 tablespoons

Lemon Juice 2 tablespoons

Instructions:

Prepare the Dough: Combine flour and salt. Cut in butter. Gradually add water. Knead into a ball. Divide into two portions, wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Prepare the Filling: Toss apples with sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice.

Roll Out the Dough: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 10×15-inch pan. Roll out one dough disk, transfer to pan.

Add the Filling: Spread apple filling over the dough.

Roll Out the Top Crust: Roll out the second dough disk, place over the filling. Seal edges. Brush with egg wash. Cut slits.

Bake: Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown and apples are tender.

Cool and Serve: Let cool in the pan. Serve warm or at room temperature.
